We know that the Scrum Master is responsible for the team’s effectiveness, as studied in the PSMI guide

But who really is the Scrum Master?

We can say that a Scrum Master is the Servant Leader who serves the Scrum Teams and the organization in many ways.

The Scrum Master is an Impediment Remover. When the scrum team has impediments, he helps them find a solution. As you know, the team is a self-organized one. For this reason, it is the team itself that needs to find a solution. Therefore, the Scrum Master acts only as a helper.

The Scrum Master is a Facilitator that helps the scrum team by asking questions, listening, and understanding the problem. In this way, it helps the team go to the root cause of the problem and make their solution.

The Scrum Master is a coach, a mentor, and a teacher for the scrum team and the organization. In fact, the Scrum Master motivates the people (in and out of the scrum team) to do their best; He transfers his experience about Scrum; He helps individuals to learn new things about Scrum.

The Scrum Master is a Manger who manage impediment by removing them and process by supporting the team in optimizing their process. He isn’t a manager for people who are self-managed.

The Scrum Master is also a catalyst for the change, enabling the organization a culture in which Scrum can live.

But what’s the principal misunderstanding about scrum master?

It’s wrong to look at the Scrum Master only as a scribe or a secretary to get the room and gettings notes during the events. Or to the admin of Jira. We already know that the Scrum Master is more than this.

The Scrum Master isn’t the people who give an assignment to the people (Team Boss) or give fine (Scrum Police) to those who don’t precisely follow the Scrum Rule. Instead of command and control, the scrum master is the one who inspires people to do the best e facilitate the resolution of the problem.

For the exam you need to remember that:

  • The Scrum Master remove impediment by facilitating the resolution;
  • Facilitation is about making the correct answer, listening and understanding the problem, bringing the team to the root cause of the problem, and allowing themself to solve the problem;
  • The Scrum Master isn’t a boss who gives an assignment to the teams and say how to do the things;
  • Instead, the Scrum Master try to coach, mentor, and teach people to do their bust, to use his experience in the scrum and learn more about scrum;
  • The Scrum Master is a manager for impediments and processes, not for people;
  • For all these reasons, the scrum master is more than a scribe, a secretary, a Jira admin, and so on.
